Lighting Design WINGS

Euroluce is taking place in Milan from April 9 to 14 2013. Architects, light manufacturers, lighting planners and lighting designers from many different countries will be showcasing their lights and lighting concepts. Those who are fascinated by that should also be interested in the following: WINGS, the distance learning centre at the University of Wismar, is offering an English-language, part-time correspondence course “Lighting Design – Architectural Lighting and Design Management, ” leading to an internationally recognised Master of Arts qualification. This combination of lighting design and management taught by lecturers of various nationalities is unique in the academic world and is coupled with workshops in Wismar, Berlin and Bangkok. WINGS has been offering the master’s course since winter semester 2012/13 and is attracting students from a number of different nations with its global concept. A large proportion of these come from Asia, South and Central America and the Arabian countries. It is the first international, English-language distance learning course to combine content such as practical planning of architectural lighting with design-oriented management. The next course starts this winter semester 2013/14. The deadline for enrolment is July 15 2013. Euroluce is a highly important event for WINGS: “Its internationality and the number of visitors at the Euroluce show that the relatively new career of ‘lighting designer’ has become more significant and has also gained recognition around the world recently,” says Professor Thomas Römhild, course leader of the part-time master’s course in lighting design.

Course content: lectures in design and management
The four-semester master’s course combines the areas of “architectural lighting design” and “design management”. International lighting designers will teach students about drafting techniques and design criteria relating to architectural lighting. Special feature: management lecturers complement the design-related course content by looking at design-specific marketing and project management. Among other things, the lighting planners-to-be study market analysis tools, management methods and the development of business plans. “With a combination of design and management tasks that is unique in the academic world, the master’s course in lighting design is laying the essential foundations for leading management positions in planning offices specialised in technical lighting or in industries concerned with lamps, lights and natural daylight around the world,” explains Römhild.

Course structure: flexible study and internationality
The number of self-study phases gives students sufficient opportunity to freely organise their time and study alongside their careers. Workshops are held during every semester – in Wismar and Berlin (Germany) as well as in Bangkok (Thailand). In these workshops, lecturers teach the subject matter and discuss study projects together. During the one-week workshops the lighting designers-to-be have the opportunity to gain practical experience in strategic project management and lighting design.
